Imported pigment. Italian Rosso Ercolano, Genuine Italian Earth - Named for the resort town at the western edge of Mt. Vesuvius, in southern Italy, Italian Rosso Ercolano is a fiery natural red earth typically found in areas of past volcanic activity.

Distinctly warmer and more yellow in tone and tint than either our Terra Rosa or the Italian Venetian Red, Italian Rosso Ercolano is a delicately nuanced semi-transparent earth red ideal for creating soft salmon pinks with white for instant flesh tones.

Shown here is “Self-portrait in a Velvet Beret” by Rembrandt van Rijn, Gemäldegalerie, Berlin, oil on oak panel painted in 1634. Rembrandt employed natural earth pigments, especially orange reds, in his works; as a warm ground color, in layered passes, and in later works combined with other lake (transparent) colors.

Ercolano sits on the site of the ancient village of Herculaneum, buried by the same historic volcanic eruption in 79 AD, a few days after Pompeii. Pictured is the still standing Roman Colosseum of Ercolano with Mt. Vesuvius in the background.

Italian Rosso Ercolano is milled with the finest alkali refined Linseed Oil in limited quantities for a naturally drying durable paint film.
