Imported pigment. Delicate in warmth and mixing strength, this natural burnt yellow earth is a rich red ochre. Often used as an authentic "flesh ochre," French Ochre Red produces earthy pinks with white and is deeper and redder than the French Ochre Havane.
Used in both ritual and art since ancient times, red ochres can be formed naturally in areas of past volcanic activity or produced by the heating (calcination) of yellow ochre. Our French Ochre Red is an excellent example of a burnt yellow earth; the more commonly used red ochre by artists from the Middle Ages through the 18th century.
Shown here is "The Little Street," by Johannes Vermeer, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, oil on canvas painted about 1657-1658. Vermeer used red ochre for the bricks of the buildings and also to complement the blue in the sky: mixing the red ochre and white with his blue to form a delicate but colorful silvery gray.
