El Greco Landscape Set
Doménikos Theotokòpoulos, nicknamed El Greco, was born and trained in Crete, becoming a master within the Post-Byzantine art tradition before traveling at an early age to Venice and Rome to pursue his career and be influenced by the Venetian Renaissance style. He is known to have created his greatest works, a decade later after moving to Spain in 1577, settling in Toledo.
Painted in 1598-1599, El Greco's oil on canvas "View of Toledo," at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY, was imagined to be more than a factual rendering of the city. The Master's great attention to color in contrasting saturation, value, and tone in both the sky and the greenery below add to the painting's uniquely expressive style and compelling beauty.
